The M41A Pulse Rifle from Aliens.
This project has been an ongoing side project for many years at this point, as I've tried to create a real, workable version of the prop shown in the film. I didn't want to simply recreate what was produced as a prop for the movie, I wanted to design, inside and out, a real weapon. As such as it's an interpretation of the original, with the original design elements rationalized into functional components. I spent way too long researching, building, rebuilding and tweaking this model. Learning not just how weapons work, but how fairly obscure technologies like caseless ammunition would work.
The model was initially concepted in Maya, but I switched to Fusion 360 as it was much more suited to CAD-like work. The interior is as fully detailed as the exterior, with a fully designed operating mechanism. The grenade launcher has the same level of detail, and the whole thing can be broken down into component parts. Yes, I've been noodling this in extreme detail for far too long.
It's also designed to be fully modular so that parts can be swapped out to create various configurations.
It's exciting to be able to finally show this off as I've been obsessing about this weapon ever since I saw Aliens.
